Sunfish Fleet

The Avalon Yacht Club provides lots of sailing opportunities for the SUNFISH enthusiast. Competitive regattas and leisure sailing activities appeal to sailors of all ages and experiences. The sailing page and the sailing calendar list all the activities available for the Sunfish as well as the Optimist, Laser and 420 sailors.

The Sunfish is a popular choice for its sturdy and simple design. It is easy to rig and can accommodate two sailors. It is a fun boat that can be fine tuned for competitive racing. The AYC Youth Sailing Program offers instruction on Sunfish as well as Optimists, Lasers and 420s. “Adult Sailing Lessons” and private instruction can assist adult members to become comfortable on the water.

Sunfish sailors of all ages and experience, enjoy the camaraderie and competitiveness of the AYC Summer Series, which consists of 5 Saturday regattas scheduled during July and August.

Sunfish Sailors race in appropriate age groups: Master Fleet (age 40+), Alumni Fleet and Junior Fleet. There are prizes each week, as well as several coveted Perpetual Awards based on the participation and performance in this regatta series.

Skipper’s Meetings start promptly at 10am; arrive early to rig your boat and get it on the beach. We would like to start the races around 10:15am! Patrol boats are on the water, so come out and practice your sailing skills. Plan to stay for the Sailors’ Lunch and awards!

In addition to the club races, Sunfish sailors are encouraged to participate in various interclub events in South Jersey including weekend Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association Regattas and mid-week Juniors Regattas. See MAYRA section for more details.

AYC Sunfish sailors love season-extending activities. Join the fun and compete in the Memorial Day and Labor Day Regattas. Also, sailors gather on Saturdays at 11am in June for Pre-Season Sailing and tune-up, and in September for Post-Season Sailing adventures.
