The Laser is an Olympic class single-handed sailboat designed for simplicity and performance. Although all Lasers are built to the same specifications, three classes of Lasers have evolved to accommodate a variety of skill levels: the Standard, the Radial and now the 4.7. In each case, the hull is identical and only the bottom mast section and sail are changed.
The Avalon Yacht Club Laser Fleet is a group of sailors from juniors to adults who get together on a weekly basis during the summer (weather permitting) for some fun club level racing. We use all three rigs; 4.7, Radial and Full. Laser races are conducted on weekends along with other AYC dinghy fleets. Please refer to the AYC Sailing Calendar for specific dates and times.
The Laser is also used during the week by the advanced sailors in the AYC Youth & Sailing Program. Junior sailors receive instruction on more competitive racing skills and participate in various interclub events in South Jersey including weekend Mid Atlantic Yacht Racing Association Regattas and mid-week Juniors Regattas.
Since 2007, John Groskoph has been dedicated to teaching sailors about this exciting boat. Through his encouragement, the popularity of the Laser Fleet has grown.
Laser sailors of all ages and experience are invited to enjoy the camaraderie and competitiveness of the AYC Summer Series, which consists of 5 Saturday Regattas scheduled during July and August. There are prizes each week, as well as several coveted Perpetual Awards based on the participation and performance in this regatta series. See the AYC Sailing Calendar for specific dates.
AYC Laser sailors are welcome to participate in the season-extending activities. Join the fun and compete in the Memorial Day and Labor Day Regattas. Also, sailors gather on Saturdays at 11am in June for Pre-Season Sailing and tune-up, and in September for Post-Season Sailing adventures.
