The Club 420 is a two person boat rigged with a spinnaker and trapeze. The name describes the overall length of the boat in centimeters (the boat is exactly 4.2 meters long). It has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, and is designed to plane easily. The Club 420 is popular in North America, and is sailed extensively by high schools and college sailing teams.
The Club 420 is used in our Youth Sailing Program Monday through Thursday with our intermediate and advanced sailors. Our 420 sailors travel to various interclub events in South Jersey as part of the South Jersey Summer Series.
The AYC Summer Series gives 420 sailors of all ages a chance to compete in their home waters. Regattas are scheduled for 5 Saturdays during July and August. There are prizes each week, as well as several coveted Perpetual Awards based on the participation and performance in this regatta series. Skippers’ Meetings start promptly at 10am; arrive early to rig your boat and get it on the beach. We would like to start the races around 10:15am! Patrol boats are on the water, so come out and practice your sailing skills. Plan to stay for the Sailors’ Lunch and awards.
We also run 420 races on weekends along with other AYC dinghy fleets. Please check the AYC Sailing Calendar for specific dates and times. At the club level we do not maintain an age limitation and we often have sailors of all generations. Three AYC owned 420s are available for use by our youth during the week as well as by any member for the weekend races.
AYC 420 sailors are welcome to participate in the season-extending activities. Join the fun and compete in the Memorial Day and Labor Day Regattas. Also, sailors gather on Saturdays at 11am in June for Pre-Season Sailing and tune-up, and in September for Post-Season Sailing adventures.
